What next for QPR and Reading?

Sunday, the 27th of April 2013, the day where a 6 pointer became more than just a 6

pointer, it was all about each of these two Premier League club’s Premier League lives. Their status, integrity, dignity, salaries, futures, playing careers….etc were on the line, but the most built up game of the season relying on relegation survival, which could have been the most perfect game for the neutrals, with passion, players giving it their all, mistakes, goals…. ended up being unarguably the worst game for a long time. To the displeasure of most QPR fans, Harry Redknapp and Bosingwa came on the field with a smile on their faces after the 0-0 result that effectively sent both teams down. After the game Adkins seemed positive and optimistic, as always, whereas Redknapp, although saying they could come back soon, seemed like a broken man with his record not looking so impressive now taking two teams down and saving two in similar situations and with the prospect of a team on a Champions League salary, being in the Championship.

Reading :

Season overall:

I suppose no one could have expected a lot from Reading this season, although singing players like Pogrebnyak and Carrico, who were sold from their clubs because they didn’t reach their expected potential. But from an outside perspective, this Reading side weren’t even the best side in the Championship, player by player, when they won it. Their main attribute since Brian McDermott was there, was the team spirit and collaboration with the team and I don’t see why Adkins couldn’t reproduce that or even do better. Reading players have also surprised us like McCarthy against Liverpool or Adam LeFondre becoming the most prolific super-sub in the league. Most of Reading’s players weren’t even at the standard that Cardiff’s players are now and they didn’t strengthen enough or when they did, not well enough, the players couldn’t match the standards of those whose strengthened like Southampton, West Ham, Aston Villa etc.

What’ll happen next season?

I don’t see Reading having any problems next season, they will most likely be a mid-table club, but in the Championship a few bad games for a mid-table club easily makes them easily become a League 1 club. But with Adkins as manager they will most likely push for at least a play-off spot, which is not impossible, but they will have to strengthen and probably get rid off.

Who to buy?

Reading could easily look at clubs who will be relegated to League 1 to bring in players, like bringing Kevin Doyle back or Bristol city’s Steven Davies. Their priority, in my opinion, should be to get rid off Pogrebnyak, as the Russian hasn’t really impressed and Adam LeFondre has shown that he is more persistent that the Russian. But all in all Reading don’t really need to bring in any players or shift any out.

Season overall :

Well Reading’s relegation is excusable with players not really up to standards, but QPR this season have been an absolute disgrace to their fans. Mark Hughes didn’t do himself any justice as a manager by showing yet again that he is not capable of managing a club where you can simply spend millions over the valuation of a player and try to manage a dressing room full of egos, the players didn’t want to play for him or the shirt and quite frankly are disgraceful to what football is about, when some young players put in the most amount of hours to try and become and play professional football and don’t make it, then there are these players who are just happy to get paid and not bother on the pitch. Under Harry Redknapp not a lot changed apart from impressive wins against Fulham, Chelsea, Southampton and Sunderland also including impressive draws against Man City and Tottenham which game QPR fans “false hope”, the players still looked like they were only there for the money and not to actually play, Loic Remy was a signing where QPR couldn’t have hoped for better, he was the only player that seemed able to play with Taarabt and scored a fair amount of goals and actually play like he does care, unlike a big list of players including Bosingwa, Mbia, Diakite, Taarabt, Granero, Bothroyd……

What’ll happen next season?

This summer will probably be the most crucial in QPR’s history, depending on whether they sign the right players and manage to get rid off all the players that Redknapp needs to get rid off. I can’t tell at all where QPR will be next season because I think the whole quad will be completely different. The one thing QPR will have to hope for is that Tony Fernandes stays at Loftus Road, otherwise they could easily go into administration with all the salaries in that squad. With Redknapp as coach I don’t see why, with any squad, they couldn’t put up a fight for promotion, as we all know, he is a very capable manager, although his tactical abilities have been questioned regularly.

Who to buy?

This prospect makes me laugh when the simple matter is to offload a lot of these players and the squad will still be decent enough to amount a promotion challenge. I’d be surprised if Samba stays if the rumoured salary he is getting is true, along with Mbia, Bosingwa, Ben-Haim, Diakite will all certainly have to go. The likes of Granero, Mackie, Zamora, Hoillet, Hill, Green and Wright-Phillips could all still realistically stay at the club. Cesar has had a good season compared to the others and I would see it as unrealistic for him to stay and the likes of Remy, who would probably want to stay in the Premier League or go to another top division in Europe. Another problem is that of the loan players that they have let out including Barton, Ferdinand, Faurlin, Cisse, DJ Campbell…. who would probably be loaned out again to just ease of the pressure to
