Manchester Derby – Match Preview

15 points is the gap between the reds and the blues. It’s a must win for Manchester City tonight, otherwise it’s a kiss goodbye to the Premier League.

Just over a year ago, Manchester United were 8 points clear from the noisy neighbors with just a few games left in the Premier League season. Remarkably the blues won their first Premier League title weeks later making it a speechless ending to the season.

Nearly a year on from City’s Premier League glory, the trophy is looking like to be making it’s journey towards Old Trafford.

Manchester United are this time 15 points clear creating an even more difficult task for the team in blue than it was last season.

The word vengeance is the best word to describe the red devils’ campaign this season.

In the last summer transfer window both Manchester clubs had Robin van Persie on top of their transfer lists ever since the announcement of van Persie refusing to sign a new contract at Arsenal.

The Dutch striker preferred to join the red side of Manchester for a fee of £24 million rejecting a move to the blue side of Manchester.

Football fans and experts believed Manchester United’s signing of the 29 year old striker was going to be the difference between both Manchester clubs.

The number 20 on the Dutchman’s back could have been a signal to Manchester City

that he was the man that was going to bring Manchester United’s 20th league title.

Well, the way this season has unfolded so far it is beginning to look like van Persie was the answer to Manchester United’s misery from last season.

December 9th 2012 was the last meeting between the two sides. With just seconds remaining until the full time whistle, van Persie scored the winner for the reds from a deflected free kick which has kept United on top of the table ever since. The winning goal also ended Manchester City’s undefeated run at the Etihad stadium.

The last time both clubs meet at Old Trafford was a match to forget for the home fans but certainly a match to remember for the visiting fans, as Manchester City thrashed the reds 6-1. Sir Alex Ferguson quoted after the match “Worst day to his managerial career”.

Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini, has yet again been telling the media that the title is over and reckons his club should stay focus with the FA cup. But is the Italian playing mind games? Who knows after the 48 year old said the same phrase last season but still won the title.

A win or a draw for the home side on Monday night should be expected to become champions of the Premier League for the 13th time.

If the away side travel back to the Etihad with a win their title hopes are still alive.

It’s make or break for Roberto Mancini and his players on Monday night.
