What Now for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal?

Last Saturday, Arsene Wenger celebrated a monumental day in his career, managing his 1000th game for Arsenal, sadly for him the celebrations didn’t last long Arsenal went on to be humiliated by Chelsea losing 6-0 in what Arsene Wenger described as a nightmare.

7 minutes thanks to Samuel Eto’o who just loves the big games and Andre Schurrle in what was a weird day for both Arsene Wenger’s men and the referee Andre Marriner as Oxlade-Chamberlain conceded a penalty after he deemed to touch the ball with his hand trying to clear Eden Hazards curling effort away from goal. The referee then pointed to the spot and gave Kieron Gibbs his marching orders even though it was Oxlade-Chamberlain that committed the foul, his discussion with Marriner regarding the foul and owning up to his mistake made no difference to the referee’s decision, a very bizarre moment.

Hazard comfortably put the penalty away, three minutes before the break Oscar capitalized from the great team work between Schurrle and Torres to get an easy tap in and to go in at half time 4-0 up. You felt more goals were available for Chelsea and so did they with another shot from Oscar, slotting it into the corner of the goal, then substitute Salah came on to finish the game off.

So why did it all go so wrong for Arsene Wenger? Arsenal have struggled to face the big clubs this season, but they haven’t just lost games, they have also conceded way too many goals. They lost 6-3 to Man City, 5-1 to Liverpool and now 6-0 to Chelsea, these are massive score lines and you cannot be losing by this margin against teams you are challenging for the title.

Many have questioned whether Arsene Wenger should move on after this season, for me it’s a decision the Arsenal board and Wenger must take time on, I can’t see them rushing into it and that is the right thing to do. I can still see him there next season, as recently as January of this year Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis stated that Wenger was set to extend his contract with the club and that the Premier League’s longest-serving manager, who is in the final 12 months of his current deal, would be staying.

In defence of Arsene Wenger he has been one of the best managers the Premier League has ever seen, yes he hasn’t won a trophy for a while but it isn’t for the lack of trying, they just seem to run out of steam after Christmas, which has been seen for the last few seasons now. They currently have key players out injured, including Walcott and Ramsey and Ozil is still trying to adapt to the Premier League having signed for Arsenal for a whopping £42.4 million, in my opinion like Chelsea they don’t have a clinical finisher up front.

Arsene Wenger has been seen over the years to not splash the cash in the transfer window, especially in January but if he stays after this season I think he may have to change that and sign a few world class players, which will be difficult because the big players will want to join the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City who they know they will have a chance of winning trophies, also even Liverpool as they are having a great season especially with the SAS (Sturridge and Suarez) partnership up front. Wenger will have to try to bring in world class players if he has any chance of winning the Premier League or some kind of silverware.

I will be very surprised if Arsenal remains in the title hunt this season, I think they need to wait until the summer to bolster their squad to be anywhere near as consistent as the other top teams around them. Just look at the form of Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool at the moment, all three are consistent, they still need that bit extra in their team to improve their game further, but with all three putting in comfortable wins against Arsenal it shows how much Arsenal need to improve their performances to compete for the chance of winning the title.
