Tour De France 2013 Stage 20 Annecy To Le Semnoz Review

Quintana wins his first Tour De France stage on a day that practically decided the final order of the general classification putting Chris Froome on top over 5 minutes ahead of his closest rival.

Four broke away early on, Voigt (RTL), Rolland (EUC), Burghardt (BMC) and Flecha (VCD) during the time they gained a lead on the peloton, there was a counter-attack that came from Gautier (EUC), Riblon (ALM), Astarloza (EUS), Brutt (KAT) and Clarke (OGE). Anton (EUS) not long after tried to catch up with the five who counter-attacked. Rolland was in pursuit of the polka-dot jersey so he naturally took the five points available on the first climb, cote de Puget, Flecha (3 Pts), Voigt (2 Pts) and Burghardt (1 Pt).

On col de Leschaux, Rolland was surprised when Anton jumped ahead of him near the top to take 2 points, Rolland (1 Pt). This put Rolland momentarily in the lead of the mountain classification.

The escapees were the first to arrive at the intermediate sprint and Flecha took maximum points (20 Pts). Riblon (17 Pts), Gauthier (15 Pts), Burghardt (13 Pts), Clarke (11 Pts), Boigt (10 Pts), Anton (9 Pts), Astarloza (8 Pts), Brutt (7 Pts), Rolland (6 Pts). When the peloton arrived, the next points on offer were hardly contested but Greipel took 5 points, Cavendish took 4 and Sagan took 3 to confirm that he will win the green jersey for this year’s Tour De France.

Col des Pres was the fourth climb and Rolland took 2 points even though he seemed to  illegally block Anton from getting to the top ahead of him, Anton got second place and took 1 point.

On Mont Revard, the oldest cyclist in the race, Voigt, decided to go on his own and got a reasonable distance ahead of everyone, the group was separated into 3 different groups chasing away from the peloton. Voigt got 10 points, Anthony (8 Pts), Rolland (6 Pts), Riblon (4 Pts), Gilbert (2 Pts) and Van Garderen (1 Pt).

On the final climb up to Le Semnoz, the yellow jersey group was mainly led by a couple of Sky riders and Movistar riders to make sure their rivals would drop off. It only took them a few kilometres to catch up with the leader, Voigt, and take over him. Quintana attacked on the mountain, which has become a regular event in this year’s Tour De France. Froome, Quintana and Rodriguez made sure that their speed would make Contador crack, which it eventually did. Quintana’s attack was followed only by Rodriguez, Froome basically let them go ahead as their time gap was no threat to the yellow jersey and that gave Quintana the stage win and polka-dot jersey.
