Porter’s Predictions – Confederations Cup – Third Place Play-Off and Final

Updated: June 29, 2013

The Third Place Play-Off and the Final of the Confederations Cup have been decided. Brazil earned a place in the final after defeating Uruguay 2-1 thanks to goals by Fred and Paulinho. It’s Spain that will be joining them in the final after they scraped through 7-6 on penalties against Italy in a well fought 0-0 game.

That means the third place play-off will be Uruguay vs Italy, and the final will be Brazil vs Spain. Here are my predictions for the final games of the Confederations Cup.

Third Place Play-Off

Uruguay vs Italy – Neither of these teams want to be in this final but someone has to play it. Uruguay, in my eyes, is coming into this game on the back of a poor tournament. Some names like Cavani haven’t lived up to the expectation of them portrayed in the media. They’ll have to step up their game big time if they want to find a win against Italy, the team that drew 0-0 against the world champions Spain. Italy dominated for much of the game against Spain despite not having striker Mario Balotelli, but they were made to pay in the penalty shoot-out for not taking their chances. Italy look the more stronger side going into this match, but it’s a wonder if Cavani and Suarez will step up more in this game to allow their team to go out on a high. Uruguay 2-1 Italy AET.

Brazil vs Spain – The hosts Brazil are back in the final of the Confederations yet again, and they’ll be looking to repeat the same performance from 2009 against Spain. The neutrals will love this game, but Spanish fans should feel lucky for their side to be here after they were outplayed by Italy in the semi-final. Spain however, has never won the Confederations Cup, so they will be desperate to add this trophy to their impressive recent collection. Brazil is the team they have to beat though to get their hands on the trophy, and they won’t be a push over. With home advantage on their side and the current form of Neymar, I see Brazil winning this game. Brazil 3-2 Spain.
