Newtown Sign Tolley

Updated: January 13, 2016

Welsh Premier League club Newtown AFC have announced the signing of former Shrewsbury Town player Jamie Tolley.

The midfielder joins the Robins after being a free agent for the opening part of the season, but arrives at Latham Park with a host of experience under his belt.

The 32-year-old central midfielder will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s crunch clash with Aberystwyth Town and boss Chris Hughes was pleased to secure the signing of such an experienced player.

He said: “For us we are delighted because Jamie brings with him a lot of football league experience.

“He played a lot of games for Shrewsbury Town and turned out for a lot of football league sides, so he will be a great addition to the squad.

“This signing is a big signing for us, and represents what we are trying to do here, and to have Jamie on board is great.”

With the Robins squad still relatively young, Hughes is looking forward to seeing Tolley aid the younger players with the experience he boasts.

“Something else he brings with his experience is the ability to help the younger players in the squad, and that is something that we are looking forward to.

“Jamie hasn’t played this season, however he will be in the squad for the game at Aber this weekend.”

Tolley’s CV

Mansfield Town (2012-13) – 2 appearances & 0 goals

Wrexham AFC (2010-12) – 50 appearances & 10 goals

Hereford (2009-10) – 7 appearances & 0 goals

Macclesfield Town (2006-09) – 62 appearances & 3 goals

Shrewsbury Town (1999-06) – 184 appearances & 20 goals

Tolley began his career at the Gay Meadow, becoming the club’s youngest player in 1999 at the age of 16.

He went on to have a successful spell with the Shrews, becoming a fan’s favourite and playing alongside the likes of Manchester City’s Joe Hart, and Wolves’ Dave Edwards.

After 181 appearances and 17 goals for the Shropshire side, he moved on to Macclesfield Town, making 63 appearances, with a spell at Hereford following by 58 appearances for Wrexham in the Conference.

Cameo spells with Mansfield Town, Kidderminster Harriers and Colwyn Bay came next, with Tolley becoming a free agent for the start of this season.

The Tolley family have had Latham Park links in the past with his cousin Glenn, also a Shrewsbury Town graduate, playing 54 games for the Robins between 2006 and 2008.
