The start of the new football season begins at Wembley Stadium in the Community Shield between Premier League champions Manchester United and FA Cup winners Wigan Athletic.

One of the biggest transfer sagas of this summer’s transfer window involving Wayne Rooney possibly leaving the Red Devils for rivals Chelsea has been left out of the squad for Sunday’s Community Shield.

Manchester United’s Luis Nani and Ashley Young have also missed the bus for Wembley due to ankle injuries.

Nani has still not fully recovered from his injury which was suffered in their last pre-season away match against AIK Solna in Stockholm which ended in a draw (1-1).

Robin van Persie, Patrice Evra and skipper Nemanja Vidic did not attend Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial at Old Trafford last Friday but are fit to feature in the Community Shield.

United’s new manager, David Moyes, has not had the best of starts for the red side of Manchester. Moyes has so far won two matches but has suffered three defeats and two draws.

But a win over Wigan Athletic on Sunday will seal his first silverware at United since starting his job on the 1st of July. A good first impression will boost their confidence for the beginning of next weekend’s Premier League season.

Moyes is not the only Scottish manager trying to get used to life at a new club. Roberto Martinez’s replacement, Owen Coyle, is the new manager at Wigan and has had a good start at the club.

Wigan’s first game in the Championship since suffering relegation from the Premier League back in May ended with a comfortable 4-0 win over Barnsley.

The former Bolton and Burnley manager has so far signed a few Premier League names such as Grant Holt, James McClean and Marc-Antoine Fortune. All three players are all expected to appear in Sunday’s Community Shield with McClean yet to make a debut.

Wigan captain, Gary Caldwell, could miss out Wembley due to a back injury.
