Juventus 2 – 0 Celtic (Agg 5-0)

Updated: March 6, 2013

A goal from Matri (24′) and Quagliarella (65′) help juventus go through to the last eight of the champions league without any problems. Although Celtic put up a valiant fight, for what seemed to be a lost cause since they went down 2-0 in the first game, but it wasn’t enough to get past the italian champions.

Celtic have beat the likes of Spartak Moscow and Barcelona, but this game against Juventus seemed a step too far, especially over two legs.

They may have lost 5-0 on aggregate, which is an unjustified result seeing how Celtic played over the two legs, but Neil Lennon and the Celtic team can hold their heads high after that performance and could probably do something next year in the Europa league or have another go at beating the giants in the champions league.

The highlight of the night was without doubt the passion and support that the Celtic fans showed, even when their team was down 2-0.

Although Celtic had more possession than Juventus they failed to seriously challenge Buffon’s goal. For both the goals, Celtic failed to stay calm and stay organised which led to them being out of position, but credit would have to go to Matri and Quagliarella for their partnership and movement that opened up Celtic’s defense, which left the Juventus players to just tap in the ball.

We also see yet again what Juventus midfielders Vidal, Pogba and of course Pirlo by using space behind the Celtic defense to make those passes that caused Celtic problems very often in the game.

Celtic attacked Juventus with a lot of pace, they didn’t seem to have the experience to compose themselves and wasted too many chances. Any decent chance that Celtic had involved Samaras, including a few shots either going wide or going over.

Over the course of the champions league this year, Celtic have managed to utilise the space wide to get crosses in which can cause any team problems, but they decided to abandon that tactic tonight and tried to mainly play through the middle with pace, which seemed to work during the first 20 minutes but then Hooper didn’t seem to know what to do, especially being surrounded by Juventus players and unable to play properly.
