It’s the return of ‘World Cup Wednesday’ on Let’s Talk Sport for the 2nd edition. There’s 79 days to go until the big kick-off for the 20th edition of the FIFA world cup.

In this week’s ‘World Cup Wednesday’, I look back at the most unforgettable exits to the biggest football competition in the world.

It’s not looking back at different countries that have entered the tournament since it all started back in 1930, we’re looking back at England’s history of being knocked out of the competition.

Ronaldinho sends England home

On Friday 21st June, 2002. England had reached the quarter finals as the world cup were hosted by South Korea and Japan.

In the last 8, the English were up against the mighty Brazil who are very well known for winning the most world cups (5).

Former England striker, Michael Owen, scored the opening goal in the first half looking like a possibility of reaching into the semi-finals.

Unfortunately, the Brazilians grabbed an equalizer a moment before the halftime break thanks to Rivaldo.

Minutes after the interval rising star, Ronaldinho, challenged goalkeeper, David Seaman, a long range free kick but it ended badly for the goal stopper.

Watch the video above to find out the conclusion.

Disallowed goal makes England angry

England finished runners up to USA in the group stages of the 2010 world cup in South Africa qualifying for the last 16.

The catch with going through as runners up of a group stage is the risk of playing a high quality group winning side.

England were with Germany in the last 16 on a Sunday afternoon in Bloemfontein.

Germany were a dominant force scoring the first two goals early in the first half from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski.

Fabio Capello’s side looked hopeless until a goal back out of no where from

a Matthew Upson header.

Less than a minute after England’s opener and the three lions should have had an equalizer by Frank Lampard that could have changed the game, but FIFA didn’t want technology involved in the beautiful game.

‘Hand of God’ ends England’s dreams

Mexico hosted the 1986 world cup making it the second time in 16 years the nation had hosted the tournament.

England were up against a very strong Argentina team that included one of the best players witnessed in the sport, Diego Maradona.

Both sides made it all the way through to the quarter finals.

The meeting was staged at Mexico’s fine stadium, Estadio Azteca, with the weather being typically hot throughout the world cup.

England couldn’t handle the football display by their opponents as Maradona was on top form as usual, right until the man written history in a bad way.

Brazil 2014

Throughout the history of England since their only world cup glory at Wembley in 1966, it has certainly gone against them. The players, referees, technology and of course Sepp Blatter joined by his work crew.

This summer England already have themselves a tough job to do from the word go.

The three lions have been drawn in the same group as Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

The lineup looks very difficult for the players and manager. Who knows what will go against them in Brazil this summer.

Uruguay striker, Luis Suarez, might block a goal with both of his hands for the second time in his career.

Italy striker, Mario Balotelli could demolish the defence with his strength and define finishing at goal.

And even if the odds were against them, Costa Rica claiming victory over England. Now that would
