Is Top 4 the main aim for Chelsea? Or should they go for glory?

So I’m back again on the website talking about Chelsea (My favourite subject) what can I say about the last 18 months at the West London club? It’s been a rollercoaster.

Jose Mourinho losing the dressing room and in a sense himself in his last few weeks at Chelsea saw him leave the club in a way no Chelsea fan ever wanted him too again, déjà vu anyone?  Guus Hiddink steadied the ship somewhat in his interim role but still saw the blues finish in a dismal 10th place , not good enough for a team that won the title convincingly 12 months earlier.

So this brings me to the start of this season and the appointment of Antonio Conte, seeing what he had achieved with Italy over the last few years, I was ready for a different approach. The team has played with the same system for over a decade now and in the last year alone it showed that teams knew how to play against it, this was something I hoped Conte would change when he took the managers hot seat.

The signings made at Stamford Bridge weren’t the highlights of the window for some, with Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Manchester United being the main talking points but for me signing N’Golo Kante was the best, one of the best players in the league last season without a doubt was the bargain for the summer. Other signings included Marcos Alonso and the return of David Luiz, a move I wasn’t so sure about when it was announced.

The season started okay playing in our old formation beating West Ham, Watford and Burnley however after that it started to decline, drawing to Swansea, losing to Liverpool where we were outclassed throughout and then the game at the Emirates, which was the worst performance I have seen from that team in 2 years and there have been a few. Losing 3-0 to your London rivals is never a good thing and from that moment on Conte decided to change to the way he wanted.

Moving to 3 centre backs and wing backs is something Conte has used a lot and a way he thinks will work for Chelsea, he was right, since that defeat to Arsenal, Chelsea have kept 4 clean sheets in the Premier League and have looked a different team. David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta have looked strong and controlled at the back with Marcos Alonso looking another great buy at left wing back. Victor Moses is the standout at the back however by far, the man Chelsea have sent on loan more time that I can count has made a real impact with Conte and the new system at right wing back.

Keeping clean sheets is great but to win you need to create in the final third something Chelsea lacked last season but with Eden Hazard showing what he can do with confidence and freedom to roam, he looks unstoppable and so do Chelsea. Diego Costa is another who dipped last season not from the lack of trying but this season he’s had a new lease of life, being strong and aggressive without the silly sending offs and bans (So far). Also being the highest goal scorer in the league so far with 8 goals.

So writing this after the great 4-0 win against Mourinho’s Manchester United  at Stamford Bridge and 2-0 away at Southampton, the answer to the question at the top of the screen, is top 4 the main aim for Chelsea or should they go for glory? I think every team in and around the top 5 can challenge for the title this season, I certainly think Chelsea can challenge for the title but as a fan of the club getting top 4 has to be the main aim, missing out on Champions League football last year was massive, not just for the income to the club but also for the chance to win the best trophy club football has to offer. Chelsea will compete for the title this season but Top 4 and Champions League football has to be their main aim.

Do you think Chelsea can go all the way?
