Lovely weather greeted race goers at Epsom Downs on Friday 6th June 2014 where the going was officially Good for the seven race card which included The Oaks.

Amulet was the quickest horse out of the stalls and was joined in the lead by Masarah and Butterfly McQueen at the first corner. Masarah then extended a 2 ½ length advantage over the other two horses. With 3 ½ furlongs to go Masarah remained ahead with Amulet and Buttefly McQueen fading back. Thistle Bird last year’s winner at this point was in about mid field position, but then began a chase on the outside which ended with another triumph for the 7-2 J2F horse. A length behind Thistle Bird in second place came Odeliz at 5-1 and Just the Judge only a neck behind claimed third place as 10-3F.

Sennockian Star needed to be re-shod before the race resulting in a small delay to the start. As the gates opened Tres Coronas reared up and so didn’t have the best start. Soviet Rock immediately took the initiative and was joined by Salutation. With 4 ½ furlongs to go Aussie Reigns was at the back of the field. The front two horses Soviet Rock and Salutation put in a tremendous pace and had a two to three length advantage over Farraaj and Air Pilot in third and fourth place. With a ¼ mile to go Farraaj and Air Pilot had travelled together to the front as the early pacemakers faded. At the line Farraaj was victorious at 13-2 2F with a 2 ½ length advantage over 8-1 Air Pilot. Clon Brulee came in third at 8-1 seven lengths behind.

2.45 Investec Diomed Stakes (Group3, Class1): Distance 1m 114y: 7R

Gregorian went into this race as the winner from last year. In the early part of the run Highland Knight, Graphic and Gregorian went to the front whilst French Navy having had a slow start was at the back of the field. The leading group contained Highland Knight, Graphic, Penitent, Gregorian and Windhoek. Going down the hill of the course Windhoek didn’t travel as well as French Navy. On the far side French Navy began to come through with a steady charge to make up ground. Travelling on the inside rail a small gap opened up between Graphic and ? enabling French Navy to take full advantage. Taking to the front French Navy at 13-2 odds opened up a good lead to win by 2 ¼ lengths over Graphic the 9-4F and a length behind in third place Windhoek came in a 3-1.

Tigers Tale was out of the stalls very quickly and along with Trail Blaze opened up a three length advantage over Henry the Aviator and Abseil. Throughout the race these four horses made all the running. Dance And Dance made late progress with the field widely spread across the course. Abseil travelling from a mid course position veered toward the rail where Red Avenger and Velox were running. The three horses were clumped tightly together and Abseil’s jockey had to correct his line to avoid impeding Red Avenger. However, Red Avenger hugging tightly to the rail gave Velox no room for manoeuvre at all. At the line Abseil was the victor as 5-2F by a ½ length over Llanarmon Lad at 14-1. Just 1 ¼ lengths behind Red Avenger came third at 16-1 and Fury fourth at 8-1 odds.

Taghrooda extended its lead to win by 3 ¾ lengths at 5-1 odds. A four horse bunch closed in for the remaining place bets and Tarfasha at 9-2 2F odds took second by a nose over Volume in third at 9-1.
