Champions League Predictions

Updated: February 17, 2014

The Champions League is back after its winter break and it looks more exciting than ever. We can look forward to four English teams in the last 16 up against one of the strongest line-ups of any Champions League knock-out stages.

Half of the ties will be played this week, with the mighty Manchester City taking on Barcelona on home turf while German side Bayern 04 Leverkusen take on France’s only hope of Champions League success. On Wednesday Arsenal host the reigning champions, Bayern Munich, in a highly anticipated match and joint La Liga leaders, Atletico Madrid, take on last Italian side, AC Milan.

Tuesday :

Manchester City v Barcelona

From a neutral point of view, this shall be a great game. Barcelona will be looking the regain supremacy in Europe and there would be no better way to do so than to beat Manchester City at home. Pellegrini will want to show that this Man City team can progress in the Champions League, which they always failed to do under Mancini. It’s unfortunate that we won’t see Argentina’s front-two playing with Aguero out because of a hamstring injury, there is good news for City with the possible return of Fernandinho who will be City’s best hope of controlling the midfield. Barcelona won’t change the way they play and neither will City but the main players to look out for won’t

be the midfielders, but the strikers being Neymar and Negredo who could tear both defences apart with their respective attributes. I think this game will end in an exciting draw.

Manchester City 2-2 Barcelona

Bayern 04 Leverkusen v Paris Saint-Germain

Both teams go into this game in very indifferent form, PSG come into this leading Ligue 1 further ahead of Monaco than they could have hoped and Leverkusen come into this game having had a dreadful start to the post-winter part of the Bundesliga. Leverkusen’s squad is already very thin and with suspensions and injury catching up with them, they could struggle against the French side. PSG’s Cavani will miss the game through injury which is their only injury concern, Ibrahimovic will be present along with January signing Yohan Cabaye who could give the Germans a hard time and profit from Bayer’s dip in form and take the victory going into the second leg at home. I think Paris will win this game but not as easily as could be expected.

Bayern 04 Leverkusen 1-2 Paris Saint-Germain

Arsenal v Bayern Munich

Arsenal will be disappointed with their current form, losing to Liverpool and drawing against Manchester United in the league, but they picked themselves back up with a win against Liverpool in the FA Cup. Bayern Munich have continued storming away with the Bundesliga. Arsenal will struggle to contain such a strong Munich side but if they have Flamini and Arteta in preservative mode to try and break down Bayern’s midfield then they’ll have a good

chance of getting a result against the German Champions. I think Bayern will get the win but let’s not forget that last year Arsenal managed to beat Munich at the Allianz Arena 0-2.

Arsenal 1-2 Bayern Munich

Milan v Atletico Madrid

One of the most memorable moments after the draw was Milan’s Sully Muntari saying “At least we got an easy draw”. Nothing has made me laugh so much. Atletico Madrid are joint top of La Liga with Real Madrid and Barcelona and the main attention has been drawn to Madrid’s striker Diego Costa, for good reason, he has an incredible record this season, which comes as no surprise being an Atletico Madrid striker. It hasn’t been Madrid’s attack that has been their key to success but their defence is unbelievably formidable, they have conceded the least amount of goals this season in La Liga. Milan have struggled for goals, creativity and solidity over the last few years and not a lot has changed, they got a bit lucky with one of the easiest groups and still not qualifying with ease. I think Atletico will win this game and also take the tie.

Milan 0-2 Atletico Madrid
