Australia 2 – 3 Netherlands

The Netherlands keep their 100% campaign going at the world cup after coming back from 1-2 down to win 3-2.

5 days ago, the Oranje displayed one of the biggest shocks ever seen in the history of the world cup by thrashing holders Spain 5 goals to one. With Australia being their next opponents it was looking to be another walk in the park.

Memphis Depay used the space in front yards outside Australia’s penalty area to slot home the winner after a very close competition with the team down under.

The opening 20 minutes in the match didn’t separate much between the two sides. The Netherlands took their go first with the usual suspect Arjen Robben as the 30 year-old ran 40 yards to enter the opponent’s box and sweep the ball low with his clever left foot.

Robben’s 8th goal in the last 8 appearances for his country and 3rd goal so far at this world cup.

The Aussies responded very quickly with it hardly being a minute later, a fantastic long delivery from the right by Ryan McGowan is struck into the back of the net by top goalscorer, Tim Cahill. The goal was certainly a similar style to Robin van Persie’s.

Tim Cahill’s volley is one of the goals of the tournament so far

8 minutes into the second half and the Netherlands were in trouble when conceding a penalty no thanks to Daryl Janmaat. Mile Jedinak converted the penalty with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner of the net.

Holland’s coach, Louis van Gaal and the rest of the coaching staff were silenced in the dugout until the manager’s future team mate at Manchester United, van Persie whacked the roof of the net from close range to level the score.

The win for the Netherlands keeps at the top of group B with 6 points which should process them through to the last 16.

The defeat for Australia gives them only little chances of surviving the group with 0 points after a couple of games.
