Updated: March 21, 2014

It’s ‘Flashback Friday’, a recent feature addition to the Let’s Talk Sport website.

In this week’s edition we look back at Arsene Wenger’s 5 memorable moments as manager of Arsenal. The Frenchman will be celebrating his 1000th game in charge this Saturday lunchtime (22nd March) against rivals, Chelsea.

Wenger is sent to the stands

On August 5th, 2009, Arsenal were 2-1 down to Manchester United at Old Trafford. With the match’s existence in the last minute of stoppage time, his away side scored the equaliser.

The Frenchman ran onto the touchline in celebration of the level pegging goal but was denied due to the display being called offside. Mr Wenger showed his frustration by kicking a plastic bottle making Mike Dean and his fourth official instruct him to the stands.

Wenger joined the home fans shrugging off what he was told to do, creating real drama until the full-time whistle.

Worth the millions of pounds

Thierry Henry was probably the best player Wenger had ever signed at the club.

Wenger signed the striker from Italian side, Juventus in 1999 for an understandable fee of £11 million.

It took a while for Henry to settle into the beautiful game in the English footballing style, as the Frenchman didn’t score his first until making his 9th appearance.

Throughout his career at Highbury/Emirates, Henry netted 174 goals in 254 appearances before leaving the club to join Barcelona in 2007.

Arsenal were up against Barcelona on a Wednesday night.

The Spanish side last won the tournament 14 years before (1992) at Wembley stadium with the English side never celebrating European glory before.

Arsenal broke the deadlock from defender, Sol Campbell, heading the ball home after the side’s goalkeeper, Jens Lehmann, was sent off in the opening ten minutes.

Barcelona responded late in the second half with goals from Samuel Eto’o and Juliano Belletti to steal the show.

49 games undefeated

Ever since Arsene Wenger became manager at the club in 1996, he has accomplished 3 Premier League titles. But the third and previous league crown has been the notable one out of the three.

Arsenal broke a record in the world of football by being invincible for an undefeated season in the 2003/04 edition of the Premier League.

The undefeated saga lasted for 49 games until their defeat the season after in October 2004.

So, after the weekend Wenger will have reached the 1000th mark. Here’s to another 1000.
