They say money doesn’t grow on trees. Perhaps it does in Russia. Its fair to say no expense has been spared for this years winter Olympics! Putin has sanctioned an incredible £31 billion for these games, giving them the title of the most expensive winter Olympics ever. As if that wasn’t enough, Sochi also holds the record for the longest torch relay at any winter Olympics-some 39,000 miles that thing travelled!

2) FAKE SNOW

You can’t predict the weather, and as it happens the weather in Sochi at the moment is fairly tropical compared to most parts of Russia, with just a few centimetres of snow predicted.

So organisers have decided to cake the ski slopes in layers of artificial snow which they’ll put on the night before an event. May as well go to snowfactor…

3) FIGHTING SPIRIT

If you want fighting spirit,

the guys and girls who make up team GB this year have got it in shovels!

Most notably there’s Elsie Christie-who had a knockback last year when her grandmother died and she had a bad fall all in the same week. Christie is a serious medal contender this year in the speed skating. Equally the trouper-Chemmy Alcott. She may be the first British female skier to reach the world cup finals but it hasn’t always been an easy ride for the 31 year old. The day before she was due to compete in the last world cup downhill race-she broke her leg in two places. But she’s made an inspirational recovery and will be competing in Sochi this year.

4) SHARAPOVA’S SOCHI

Nope, there isn’t such thing as tennis on skates (yet!) but if there was you can sure bet Maria Sharapova to be involved! The tennis star who happens to be the highest paid sportswoman in the world began her tennis career in Sochi as a youngster, where she attended her first ever tennis lessons!

5) NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Paraguay, Zimbabwe and Tonga are all ready to be born into the winter Olympic family. Sure, these newbies are far more used to temperatures in excess of 20 degrees as opposed to Sochi’s 2 degrees, but if ever there was a time to make a grand debut at a winter Olympics, Sochi it seems, is the place!

6) SECURITY SCARES

Yup. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past through months you’ll know just how widely debated these games have been. An army of 40,000 is being used to keep the Olympics safe.

7) GOOD LUCK GUYS!

Its always nice to see some of our favourite summer Olympic athletes or past winter Olympians supporting the class of 2014.

8) TWELVE NEW EVENTS

Many of which have that ‘rather you than me’ factor. We can’t imagine doing the ski half pipe any time soon! Excitingly for the first year ever there will also be the women’s ski jumping event.

Also check out the figure skating team event, mixed. If you’re a fan of Dancing On Ice, you’re in for a real treat!

9) CHEESY FURRY FRIENDS

The leopard, The Polar bear and The Hare.

To look at you’d be forgiven for thinking they were characters from Disney on ice, but actually these are the official mascots for the games. Still, they look like they’re capable of giving big furry hugs of encouragement to Team GB.

10) EVEN CHEESIER SLOGAN

If you thought the mascots were abit cheesy you aint seen nothing yet. The official slogan for the winter Olympics is Hot. Cool. Yours. Huh? We’ll move on…

11) FIRST TIME FOR THE USA

This is the second time Russia have hosted the winter Olympics, but the first time in Russia the USA will take part (due to a boycott last time) And the USA aren’t letting the occasion go amiss-by putting forward their highest ever number of athletes for any winter Olympics. Some 230 athletes will be competing for team USA this year. Phewie!

12) SOCHI THE MUSICAL

From music legends like Sir Elton John speaking out about Russia’s gay laws to top violinist Vanessa Mae taking part in Thailand’s ski team, these games are sure set to put on a winning performance!

13) THE GREEN GAMES

Told you Sochi was a record breaking Olympics. Renewable sources of energy are being used and to build the stadium environmentally friendly building materials were used too.
